The previous Time Machine backup was interrupted.Ī disk was disconnected from your computer before being ejected.Ī software update was recently installed. The preparation stage can also take longer if: The length of preparation time Time Machine requires depends on the amount of information on your Mac, the size of the backup, and the speed of the connection between your Mac and the backup disk. Here's some information about possible causes of this problem. I'm happy to help.Īddressing the Time Machine issue can resolve both issues. The ambiguity of that last statement is I did that awhile before writing this comment and I don’t recall what I booted into first, only that it worked and was not hard to figure out what to do at that point. I know how important it is to be able to back up successfully. Installation will continue, or you will boot into the OS or get the Recovery Utilities menu (where macOS can be reinstalled from or Disk Utilities run). It's my understanding your Time Machine was getting stuck on preparing and now you're unable to complete the First Aid process. Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
